The Club
The Banff Ski Runners, founded by renowned mountaineer
Conrad Kain in 1911, is the oldest ski club in Canada and is a member of Cross
Country Canada. Over the years the club has been represented in a number of
ski sports, including cross-country skiing, ski jumping and alpine racing.
Club membership numbers have also fluctuated over the years. Today, the Banff
Ski Runners club is represented by about 30 cross-country skiing members
between the ages of 6 and 65.
The Banff Ski Runners club is inspired by the philosophy that skiing is
a lifetime sport that should be enjoyed by all levels and ages. As such, Banff
Ski Runners offers a variety of programs to accommodate all ages and
abilities. From the trails of the Bow Valley, Banff Ski Runners members have
the option of climbing provincial, national and international podiums as high
as their desires and abilities take them. Regardless of where they end up, it
will be with a happy heart and a lifetime devotion to a great sport.
Since 2000, head coach Anders Lenes has led the competitive program.
Anders spent 8 years on the Norwegian National team and is a former World
Champion and Olympian. Anders is joined by a dedicated and effective volunteer
coaching team that work with the skiers to help them attain their individual
goals. Since Anders' joined the club in 2000, Banff Ski Runners have
represented Canada at World Junior and Senior Championships, on the World Cup,
and at the Olympics, not to mention dominating performances at regional,
provincial and national events.
Banff Ski Runners is governed by a board of Directors. The Board is
elected every spring at the Banff Ski Runners annual general meeting.
